Louise Janet

Looking at one of Louise Janet‘s paintings is like being invited into the intimacy of a room, reminding us of our daily lives. Graduated of the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2023, the young painter began her career in François Boiron’s studio before joining James Rielly’s for her last two years of study.

Fascinated by 17th-century Flemish painting and the way Vermeer paints his “windows open to the world” – giving his characters an irresistible presence in his interiors – Louise makes the figurative painting her first choice.

Through her small formats, Louise Janet reveals fragments of her history. Characters evolve in her familiar interiors: far from wanting to portray her entourage, Louise reveals a part of their inner life. The decoration of a room, the casual way of leaving a messy duvet on a bed, the “organized mess” strewn on the floor… Each object is like a clue to a personality.

Oil painting allows her to immortalize certain moments that she would like to suspend in time. Like a photographer, her framing invites narration. In her diptych called Crossing, presented in the 2023 edition of Private Choice, the painter shows an apartment corridor: a half-opened doors gives us a glimpse of a bathroom, the others lead to the bedrooms of two individuals, betraying their tastes and habits by the way they appropriate the places.
