Karine Rougier
Karine Rougier‘s drawings are home to a curious, disturbing, sexual and sometimes macabre population. Evanescent, lost on the canvas, the characters discreetly pursue their anxious and liberated activities. Everything crosses Karine Rougier’s world: medical imagery, shamanism, Indian gods, Batman, Jerome Bosch…
Her work is inspired by her travels, her walks along the Mediterranean coast, her swims and her desire to believe in the wonderful. She grew up on the Ivorian Coast and was very early fascinated by magic rituals, bewitchment of bodies, wild animals …
Diving into the material, the artist plays with textures, layers, dilutions, creating abstract backgrounds where reality and dreams, fauna and flora, stars and stones levitate, suspended in the heart of time. Line draws each hair, each coat, each detail with a precision that undoubtedly stems from a certain form of obsession. Her work emanates a fragility, but also a magical force, a mysterious energy that reenchants reality.
Surrealist painters were the first to incorporate in their practice the mechanisms resulting from “outsider art”: representation of characters, landscapes-inspired-tales and popular traditions, simple techniques (drawing, painting), poor or found supports, as well as the automatic writing that opens the door of an unconscious more and more denied by the positivist rationalism. Karine Rougier created an expressionist formal vocabulary leading to eroticism, dream, childhood and monstrous.
