Karine Rougier

Karine Rougier 's drawings are home to a curious, disturbing, sexual and sometimes macabre population. Evanescent, lost on the canvas, the characters discreetly pursue their anxious and liberated activities. Everything crosses Karine Rougier's world: medical imaging, shamanism, Indian gods, Batman and Jérome Bosch...

Her work is inspired by her travels, underwater excursions in the Mediterranean and her desire to believe in the marvellous. Growing up in Côte d'Ivoire, she was fascinated from an early age by magical rituals, the bewitchment of bodies and wild animals...

Plunging into matter, the artist plays with textures, strata and dilutions, creating abstract backgrounds where reality and dreams, fauna and flora, stars and stones levitate, suspended in the heart of time. The black line draws each hair, each coat, each detail with a precision that no doubt stems from a certain form of obsession. Her work emanates a fragility, but also a magical force, a mysterious energy that reenchants reality.

The Surrealists were the first to incorporate into their official practice the mechanisms of so-called "art brut": depictions of characters and landscapes inspired by folk tales and traditions, simple techniques (drawing, painting), poor or found supports, and automatic writing opening the door to an unconscious increasingly denied by positivist rationalism. Over the years, Karine Rougier has created a formal expressionist vocabulary that gives pride of place to eroticism, dreams, childhood and the monstrous.
