Lionel Sabatté

The sphere of life as well as the transformations of the materials due to time passing are at the core of Lionel Sabatté‘s work. A complete artist, he practices painting, drawing and sculpture at the same time, making all his works interact in a permanent interconnection. His researches on the mineral, the animal, lead to poetic, sensitive and disturbing works which participate in a global reflection on our condition and the place we occupy in our environment.

Following an artistic approach based on experimentation and exploration, he works with materials that are sometimes trivial, collecting dust, ash, coal, dead skin, tree stumps, oxidised iron and bronze… which he combines. The works thus created carry both a delicacy and a “disturbing strangeness“, giving life to a hybrid bestiary: horses, bees, birds, bears, wolves, owls, unicorns…

Nourished by an imaginary approach to the world of fables, the animal figure, which is not innocent of a thought on the species, its evolution and its mutations, is omnipresent in the work of Lionel Sabatté. Through the animal, we are confronted with our own monstrosity.
