Hiba Kalache

Hiba Kalache is a Lebanese artist whose practice encompasses installation, drawing, painting and sculpture. She takes from her daily life her materials (food, glass, wire…), her process, her inspiration. Kalache questions the separation between private and public spheres, particularly what she calls “the banality of daily rituals”, as well as the definition of “home” and social belonging.

She has recently been interested in the relationship between texts and images. Produced in a period of prolonged socio-historical and existential crisis, this artwork is in tune with its time: it exposes our ambivalent desires towards the current reality, which is both fantasy and living nightmare. The gesture is fragile, intimate and intuitive, the work luminous and full of rage.

In Kalache’s work, desire is represented by partial erotic patterns (belly, breast, phallus, toe, thigh, anus, and eye) that the viewer sees or does not see, depending on his disposition of mind. Oscillating between automatism and intention, her brushstrokes evoke rays of sun or spots of excrement. What was briefly beautiful now appears distorted.
