Brankiça Zilović
Born in 1974 in Serbia. She lives and works in Paris.
Embroidery and textile universe have gradually imposed themselves in Brankiça Zilović‘s practice to become her exclusive mediums. Her work is marked by the history of Serbia and the broader issue of migration and frontier, blending individual and collective biography.
She sews, weaves and embroiders, creates installations, compositions and drawings. Her works are memorial acts in which accumulation, repetition and self-denial allow the emergence of rhizomatic configurations evoking mental landscapes. A first reading of her works shows a world subjected to an inevitable erosion.
Through repetition and the obsessive nature of her works, time dilates and reveals an almost expiatory dimension, as if it was about conjuring the demons of the past by substituting the mechanization of gesture to memory. Much more, these same gestures leave behind them a graphic trace, like sutures or scars.
Disappearance, loss, degeneration, are the motors of Brankiça’s work, and they are nothing less than calls for new beginnings.
