Boris Chouvellon

Born in 1980, Boris Chouvellon lives and works in Paris. He graduated from the Villa Arson in Nice and the Beaux Arts in Marseille.

“My field of exploration is at the limit of the urban space and its periphery (territorial, social and human). With a practice of wandering, I navigate (on foot, by car, by train) in border spaces (peripheral roads, highways, coastlines, rivers). I try to reproduce a representation of modern ruins where agricultural, industrial and commercial zones are grafted together with abandoned and forgotten constructed zones. All these states of the contemporary world are documented, photographed, recorded, filed. My working method consists of taking objects, forms, impressions from the real-world, that I then transform in the studio space. My aim is to operate displacements and disconnections that both lead fragments of the world towards an imaginary, dreamlike dimension, but also reveal its state. This process is each time a tense experience, on a knife edge, where I try to avoid the confinement that the repetition of forms, patterns and mastery engenders.”

Boris Chouvellon has always been fascinated by the backstage, or what he calls “the aesthetics of the zone”. To detect its patterns, materials and objects, he surveys peri-urban areas and “Third Landscapes”.

The artworks are the future ruins of the showbiz society, they refer to the notions of disillusionment, survival and total disenchantment.
