Shibari bench

For its 2023 edition, Private Choice presents a bench from the Shibari series, created by ColAAb. Its beams of solid wood are polished and oiled, and held together by knotted linen ropes; the wood, notched on the surface, “almost closes over the cord”. Morgane Tschiember’s work resonates with the age-old art of Shibarishe discovered at Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. In Japan, this technique from the samurai is also used in sexual practices or by gardeners, who shape trees by tying them.
