6 questions for Nadia Candet

Private Choice in 6 questions.
Answers from Nadia Candet, Founder of Private Choice.

How did you come up with the idea of launching Private Choice ?

Nadia Candet: It all starts with the idea of the private collection. When I wrote the book Collections particulières, as book editor for Flammarion between 2006 and 2008, I wanted to show the diversity of collections and approaches to collecting in France, and show them through a book. Now, I'm inviting visitors to discover the Private Choice selection and the opportunity to acquire works in a historic apartment in October.

Who is Private Choice for?

NC: To a public sensitive to contemporary art, design, tomorrow's trends and the art of living. We welcome the most discerning collectors, as well as young art lovers, museum directors, art critics, style bureau directors, interior designers looking for novelties for their clients, art advisors and gallery owners. All come to discover and/or acquire pieces from our selection of art, design and lifestyle.

What is Private Choice ?

NC: At Private Choice, you feel like you've been invited into a collector's home, into his or her cabinet of curiosities. The aim is to imagine an ephemeral collection in an exceptional location, and to live a unique experience. This year, for our tenth edition, we're taking over a Haussmann apartment overlooking the Palais de la Découverte.
What makes Private Choice so original is that works by established artists rub shoulders with those by young artists who have just graduated from art schools. Every year, we present some forty artists from all over the world.

The Private Choice team is always ready to listen to its visitors, and it's important to us to provide a genuine welcome. As soon as you arrive, we'll provide you with a guide to help you explore the exhibition space at your own pace, and a team of art history specialists will be on hand to explain the works on display.
Private Choice is also a holistic environment. The fragrances of Diptyque, our partner from the outset, take you through the space. Thierry Féret's floral compositions dress the premises. Every year, Private Choice collaborates with a number of brands to offer you the best possible experience.

Our event is accessible by registration only, via our website: privatechoice.fr. Visitors can view the address.

Private Choice is also a talent incubator?

NC: Yes, we're delighted with the careers of the artists exhibiting at Private Choice. Some have been spotted by contemporary art galleries, museums, public and private collections, while others have won prestigious awards.

I'm thinking of :

  • Enrique Ramirez, exhibited in 2017 at Private Choice (courtesy galerie Michel Rein). He has been nominated for the Prix Marcel Duchamp 2020 and is one of four artists selected by the ADIAF for an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou (Paris) from October 6, 2020 to January 4, 2021.
  • Hervé Priou, spotted at ENSBAP in June 2019 and shown at Private Choice since. He is exhibiting in 2020 at La Fab. and galerie du jour d'agnès b..
  • Gabriel Rico, exhibited in 2017 at Private Choice (courtesy Perrotin). Exhibited at the 2019 Venice Biennale at the International Pavilion and Arsenal and had a solo show at Galerie Perrotin in Paris in 2020.

What are Private Choice 's next objectives?

NC: Our aim is to develop this platform for discovering young talent, which we exhibit alongside established artists. To this end, we have developed a 'private room' online, our online shop, which is now available.

Finally, we'd like to develop the Private Choice label as a talent incubator and set up cross-collaborations with foundations, art galleries, brands and even institutions.
