Olivier Masmonteil

In 1996, Olivier Masmonteil entered the Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, where his desire for figurative painting was opposed by some of his teachers, who, like many at the time, advocated the death of figurative painting. Far from making him give up, these confrontations prompted him to question the origin of the controversy. He retraces the history of art in search of the first appearance of the question, and discovers that this debate is far from contemporary.

From Pliny the Elder to Raphael, the death of painting has been declared on numerous occasions. Yet each time, it resists and transforms itself, drawing from these quarrels the seeds of its renewal. The young artist began to explore the history of art, visiting libraries to discover ancient and contemporary painters. At the same time, he drew inspiration from the works of Gérard Gasiorowski and Markus Lüpertz, building his own personal mythology. This developed around three subjects that would never leave him: landscape, art history and the fantasy of the horizon, of travel.

Today, Olivier Masmonteil's works - which leave room for abstraction by confronting it with figurative landscapes - bear witness to the same visual passion that has guided him from the outset and consumes his pictorial compositions.
