Mathilde DENIZE

The works of Mathilde Denize, recognizable by their fragmentation, systematic three-dimensionality, and pastel shades, carry within them an intrigue, a language that only the artist seems able to decode.

A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2013 and now represented by the Perrotin Gallery, Mathilde Denize is incisive. She cuts, tears, and sews compositions using fragments of her works. From the old, canvases, installations, ceramics, and embodied, almost moving sculptures are born.

The artist joined the Villa Medici in 2020. The residency allowed her to push the boundaries of the techniques and formats she used, going so far as to give life to a series of costumes made from old canvases, which were subsequently staged in a film.

Nothing seems to be formed ex nihilo, but is rather the result of a gestation process, of a myriad of memories and relics collected and interwoven with each other.
