Mara FORTUNATOVIĆ

Born in 1987, Mara lives and works in Paris.

Mara Fortunatović immediately places her work within the tradition of minimalist sculpture. Referring to the “specific object” in reference to Donald Judd, she embraces his concept of a third way between painting and sculpture. Her credo is white, white everywhere, a spiritual daughter of Malevich and an enlightened counterpart to Soulages.

Limiting herself to the immaculate whiteness of paper and the surrounding space, she nevertheless invents an infinite number of possibilities and modulations. The white can be lightly tinted with colored nuances, the paper can provide more or less transparency, luminosity or smoothness depending on its texture, but also on its “drape,” its folds or its curves. Faithful to an in situ approach, she manipulates the space she appropriates by inhabiting it with “fragments” that are like punctuations, breaks, cuts, visual and architectural revelations.
