Malo CHAPUY

The images that animated places of worship or palaces of the late Middle Ages and the Western Renaissance seem to have traveled through the centuries to land in the works of Malo Chapuy.

A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris since 2022, the artist is interested in medieval liturgical works and illuminated manuscripts. Fascinated by their aesthetics, he seeks to adopt the eye and technique of a 14th-century painter, while bringing his own contemporary references. Particularly sensitive to the concept of anachronism, Malo Chapuy brings together characters from the religious repertoire with buildings inspired by modernist and industrial architecture in the same composition.

In 2023, Private Choice presents his series of Water Towers during the exhibition « Summer Project », in collaboration with Le 33 in Marseille. This work, inspired by the photographs of the couple Bernd & Hilla Becher, is accompanied by two oil on wood paintings representing the architecture of Le Corbusier. With subtlety, Malo Chapuy creates a trompe-l'oeil effect thanks to his work with perspective and gold highlights, which he incorporates into a meticulous series of illuminations on parchment.

In reference to the image-objects of the time, he also affixes this iconography to supports as atypical as they are current (motorcycle helmets, brand-name shoes, etc.) to make them anachronistic relics. During the anniversary edition of Private Choice, exclusive creations will be presented, as well as a new series of paintings on wood, populated with medieval and cinematographic references in connection with the famous science fiction film Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang in 1927.

In June 2022, Malo Chapuy was the winner of the Agnès B prize from the friends of the Beaux-Arts, which aims to associate a future graduate of the school with a patron.
