Hermine Torikian

Hermine Torikian is an artist and cabinetmaker specializing in wood marquetry. After training in architecture, she joined a Paris cabinetmaking workshop and devoted herself fully to wood marquetry, launching her own business in 2022. Through her creations, she reinvents this luxury craft to make it her design signature.

"In each of my pieces, the search for movement is a constant, that of contrasts a refrain. I explore the balance between the solidity and suppleness of wood, bright colors and natural hues." - Hermine Torikian

Playing with species and materials, Hermine Torikian meticulously selects her wood pieces to bring out all their light and color. The use of sycamore maple or exotic woods such as bubinga, padouk or wenge from West and Central Africa, gives her seats and lamps a contrast that immediately catches the eye.

Hand-assembling pieces cut to respect the wood's grain (grain and counter-grain), the rhythm of the motif is integrated into the heart of the material. Through the use of stripes or checkerboard patterns, she fuses her quest for movement with an intuitive approach, freeing herself from the traditional codes of marquetry, which reached its apogee in 17th- and 18th-century France.

Produced in 35 to 60 hours, his works are unique pieces, whose playful-looking curves conceal technical rigor and constant attention to detail. On display at Private Choice 2024 will be his Tangoenpositive and negative pedestal tables, and his small Bisou checkerboard lamp.
