Emmanuelle BOUSQUET

After graduating from the École Supérieure de Journalisme in Paris, Emmanuelle Bousquet spent a year at UCLA in Los Angeles, followed by Speos in Paris. She decided to photograph those dearest to her: her mother and sister. Later, it felt more appropriate to use her own body as the subject of her photographs, as a painter would use their paint. By exploring self-portraiture, she steps to the other side of the mirror.

Fascinated by the idea of confronting the torments of introspection, she discovers herself as an explorer of femininity. This approach gives rise to more aesthetic and symbolic notions, as well as a staging that has become the unmistakable signature of her style. Her work is the result of a quest that is both aesthetic and existential.

Her series Les Sens Obscurs is presented at the photo edition of Private Choice in November 2024. Models with translucent skin move gracefully in a staircase classified as a historical monument, evoking both a convent and a brothel. Wearing period wigs, these women appear as ghosts of the Grand Siècle. Their idle and languid poses suggest vanished spirits that seem to haunt the place.
