Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1991, Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria studied 3D cinema in São Paulo before continuing his training at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. A multidisciplinary artist, he expresses himself as much through matter as through the body, moving from painting to ceramics, from photography to contemporary dance.

A graduate since 2020, Daniel sets up plural poetic devices aimed at questioning a complex history, in which the representation of bodies is often limiting. His emancipatory, radical and dreamlike works anchor his practice of resilience in an exponential human transmutation. His installations also give rise to performances and soundtracks, with transgression becoming the watchword of his artistic approach: Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria intervenes where we least expect it.

In his series Berceau du Mondeseries, mattress slats are placed on the floor or suspended in the air. The impact is striking, the effect of surprise unavoidable.

In this panorama of human and animal cohabitation, Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria presents us with his vision of a fragmented world. The alternating voids and solids of the bed slats give substance to this central idea for the artist, resonating with the global ecocide we are witnessing. His thoughts in prose unfold on the back of the wooden slats, adding another level of reading to his resolutely committed work.
