Constance Ziegler

A 2009 graduate of Penninghen, Constance Ziegler explored video art, graphic design and oil painting before immersing herself in the creation of tufted carpets.

For the artist, the sensory dimension of a work is as important as its aesthetic appeal. Tufting seems to be the perfect remedy for the distance established between painting and its viewer: contact is deliberately desacralized by the very purpose of the carpet and the object, upsetting our relationship to the work of art.

For her first collection of deep-sea-inspired rugs, the artist dips into her spools as if they were paint pots, giving color a prominent place in her artistic process. She relentlessly explores the technique of modern tapestry, taking to her tufting gun to transform her watercolor drawings into fish, starfish or coral.

For the 2023 edition of Private Choice, Constance Ziegler merges worlds by creating stool-sculptures combining art, craft and design. Her two textile creations make their presence felt in the center of any room: their traces hug the floor like carpets, diffusing a daring diversity of colors and reliefs right down to the seat.
