Brankiça ZILOVIĆ

Brankića Zilović graduated from ENSBA, where she attended the workshops of Vladimir Veličković and Dominique Gauthier. Embroidery and the world of textiles gradually became central to her practice, eventually becoming her exclusive mediums. Her work is marked by the history of Serbia and the broader issue of migrations and borders, blending individual and collective biography.

She sews, weaves, and embroiders, creating installations, compositions, and drawings. Forgetting, loss, or degeneration, the driving forces behind Brankića's work, are nothing less than calls for new beginnings. Through the repetition and obsessive nature of her works, time expands and displays an almost expiatory dimension.

In 2023, Private Choice presents Brankića Zilović at the exhibition “For the Love of the Antique” conceived by Olivier Morand in Cavaillon, at the Puyricard d’Agar private mansion. Greek mythology appears in Brankića's work as a new way of questioning our memory, our values, and our relationship to the world. By choosing the figures of Venus, Athena, and Janus, the artist reveals the classical attributes of the gods and their unifying power through colorful weaving.

Her series Return to Ithaca weaves a powerful narrative that fits into her desire to map fragile, shaken territories. Ulysses' journey, eminently initiatory, survives in our collective imagination as an exploration full of pitfalls and conducive to awareness. The artist recounts through her embroideries on paperback books the missions that belong to us today, related to environmental emergencies. On her open books, the silhouettes of different countries are drawn in textile. Like islands that are part of the same archipelago, their identical format reflects their mutual destiny, inevitably linked to that of the polar circle.
