Sixtine de THÉ

Sixtine works with photography, installation, video and sculpture. She is interested in seeing how the image appears, what brings it into existence. She has often worked with analogue photography in an experimental way on fragile media such as skin, bread... Before attending the Beaux-Arts de Paris, Sixtine studied Art History and Literature, which also influences her practice.

Her inspirations include Oscar Muñoz and Sophie Ristelhueber, who address themes such as the face, the body and its fragility, echoing history, politics, and territory.

"Something That Blacks Out" is a photographic project that is both documentary and metaphysical, focusing on the twilight created by power outages in present-day Lebanon. This work was created at Villa el Qamar (French Institute of Lebanon) in 2022, where the artist was in residence. Through the unique characteristics of photographic technique, it seeks to capture the implications of a widespread loss of substance in a country facing economic collapse, contrasting with the usual image of a country known for the beauty of its light. Amidst an unprecedented economic crisis, oil is no longer subsidized, severely limiting access to electricity. The darkness punctuates daily life to such an extent that it sometimes seems on the verge of engulfing it.

Sixtine de Thé spent several months tracking the moment of the power cut, when twilight settles in and soon there is almost nothing left to see. Working with both scenes and still lifes, she systematically favored dawn and dusk – seeking the first and last image of the world – always asking the same question: what remains?
