Nicolas Dhervillers

Nicolas Dhervillers works in the fields of photography and drawing. Since 2016, the artist has been fusing photography and dry pastel, which he models with his fingers. His Remake series is made up of hyper-zoomed pastels, drawn from fragments of distant horizons, after photography. The work is an attempt at recreation, a "remake". In a nod to his past as a photographer, the horizontal stripes serve as witnesses to the stages of creation.

Also presented at the Private Choice photo edition in November 2024, his series Crossfade transcends the simple ambiguity of the medium. The artist juxtaposes archival photographsThe artist juxtaposes archival photographs, scanned and printed, with works in dry pastel. This innovative technique confronts modern and contemporary photographic processes, converging them into a pictorial medium.

Shots are superimposed and interlinked across the canvases, evoking a cinematic language Interested in the history of painting, Nicolas Dhervillers also draws inspiration from Luminism and the Hudson River School. These two American art movements of the 19th century were also influenced by the advent the advent of photography at the start of the industrial eraThis revolutionized our perception of nature and landscape. Captivated by the documentary value of paintings depicting the natural areas of the American West, Nicolas Dhervillers explores the digital archives of American museums in search of images combining historical, aesthetic and narrative qualities. Choosing seascapes, he creates dreamlike dreamlike works with a vaporous, almost ghostly atmosphere.. Like fading memories, these evanescent testimonies slip into the realm of dreams.
