Marlène MOCQUET
Marlène Mocquet was born in 1979 in Maison Alfort. A 2006 graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, she lives and works in Paris.
Marlène Mocquet had her artistic revelation at the age of 15, while confined to a hospital room for anorexia. For three months, she had only crayons and paper to occupy herself. Upon her release, she immediately began painting.
Figuration is essential for her, her work representing an introspection; representation is synonymous with the expression of emotions. Among her influences, she cites Robert Malaval, Josep Grau-Garriga, and Paul Rebeyrolle. While some compare her to Jérôme Bosch, she indicates that she only discovered him later in life; this proximity is therefore not intentional.
She constantly engages with order and chaos and indulges in creative freedom, for example, allowing chance to initiate her paintings by immersing them in a bath of lean and fat emulsions. She then chooses the story she wants to tell: a universe populated by strange creatures, shimmering colors, and plant motifs.
