Jeanne SUSPLUGAS

Born in Montpellier. Lives in Paris, France.

« Engaged but not militant, Jeanne Susplugas' approach tackles all forms and strategies of confinement, questioning the individual's relationship with themselves and with others. »

For several years now, Jeanne Susplugas has been photographing fruit baskets whenever the opportunity arises. By taking multiple shots, the artist quickly realizes that the function of these objects has gradually been diverted by their owners. Far from being limited to innocent still lifes, they often serve as catch-all trays, especially when it comes to depositing medication.

These photographs served as preparatory work for creating ceramic pieces. In this way, she tackles one of the great clichés of art history, renewing it by giving it a new dimension. Still life has long been considered a secondary theme in the hierarchy of genres as established in the 17th century, but here it becomes a polemical object, and manages to convey a powerful message.

The artist offers a highly protean body of work and deploys a wide range of mediums: drawings, photographs, installations, sculptures, and films that mutually interact and enrich each other. From this, she derives a singular aesthetic that appears seductive but whose message is also jarring and disturbing. She questions man's relationship with himself, penetrates his psyche, and exposes an obsessive, sometimes even dysfunctional, world. With these ceramics, Jeanne Susplugas proposes to subtly address the theme of addictions, which is close to her heart.
