Fahamu Pecou

For many years, Fahamu Pecou has been examining the aesthetic codes of African-American society, in particular the sartorial language of black youth in the United States and its relationship with the world of hip-hop.
Fahamu Pecou holds a doctorate in philosophy on black culture in North America, and lectures worldwide on the place of the black man in Western society. He is also a video artist, composer and performer.

He works on the community, ritual and expressive implications of black men, and more specifically on the traditions and customs which, in traditional cultures, in addition to their aesthetic values, define the status and position of each individual.
These codes, less and less practiced in Africa, have been widely taken up since the 1990s by international black youth, particularly in the United States in the world of hip-hop.

Icarus is part of the "I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD BLINGS" series. The word "blings" doesn't have an exact translation in French; it's used to refer to the ostentatious jewelry worn by the hip-hop world.

The title of the series and the work were inspired by verses by Maya Angelou, a leading figure in the American civil rights movement. In Greek mythology, Icarus died for getting too close to the sun with his wings made of feathers and wax...

"...But a bird that stalk down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing..."

"... The bird that wanders in its narrow cage rarely sees through the bars of its rage; its wings are clipped and its feet are tied; so it opens its beak to sing..."
