Boris Chouvellon
Born in 1980, lives and works in Paris. Graduated from Villa Arson in Nice and Beaux Arts in Marseille.
"My field of exploration lies at the limit of urban space and its periphery (territorial, social and human). With a practice of wandering, I navigate (on foot, by car, by train) in frontier spaces (ring roads, freeways, coastlines, waterways). I attempt to reproduce a representation of modern ruin, where agricultural, industrial and commercial zones are grafted onto abandoned, forgotten building sites. All these states of the contemporary world are documented, photographed, recorded and filed down. My working method consists of taking objects, forms and impressions from the real world, which I then transform in the studio space. My aim is to bring about displacements and disconnections which, at the same time as they take fragments of the world into an imaginary, dreamlike dimension, also reveal its state. This process is always a tense, razor-edge experience, close to imbalance, in which I try to avoid the confinement engendered by the repetition of forms, motifs and mastery."
Boris Chouvellon has always been fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes, or what he calls "the aesthetics of the zone". To uncover the motifs, materials and objects, he surveys suburban areas and third landscapes.
